Gong players who inspire us: Martin Schmitz

Finally, we have some news from the ollihess community: Today we’d like to introduce you to Martin Schmitz. Martin helps people let go of stress, find inner peace, and discover a deeper connection to themselves. With KOMM RUNTER Hamburg, he has created a space where sound, mindful touch, meditation, and personal guidance come together.

In this post, you’ll learn why his journey inspires us so much, what makes his work special, and which ollihess mallets accompany him.

Who is Martin Schmitz?

Martin describes his own journey as a shift “away from compensation—toward pure feeling.” For a long time, he sought peace and clarity amid a hectic daily life. Yoga, meditation, MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction), bodywork, and massage became important anchors for him.

His path to music was not a straightforward one. Martin originally worked in urban planning. For many years, his life was shaped by structure, responsibility, and a clear focus on performance. “Higher, faster, further” was a familiar pattern for him for a long time, one he also lived out in his free time through extreme hiking. But at some point, a whole new level opened up for him: no longer just functioning, but feeling. No longer proving, but perceiving.

Yin yoga and Thai yoga massage helped him develop a new sense of his body and become more attuned to his physical sensations. Later, he discovered the world of sound through gong meditation. He experienced the effects of sound very directly: his body responded, tension dissolved, and inner processes were set in motion. Sound and meditation created a space for him where things could realign themselves.

When Martin is interested in something, he dives right in. From yoga and meditative healing techniques to therapeutic gong playing, Martin has a wide range of training under his belt. His goal has never been simply to adopt a method from his teachers. Instead, he has distilled what truly resonates with him and recombined these approaches in new ways.

How did Martin come to play the gong?

At first, stepping into the world of gongs felt like a major hurdle for Martin. He couldn’t imagine buying a large gong right away and just diving in. So he started by taking lessons in how to play hand gongs. A small hand gong seemed like the perfect introduction to a world that quickly captivated him.

Later, Martin met Olli at a gong-making course taught by Broder Oetken—and shortly thereafter, he acquired his first large 32-inch gong. From then on, Martin played a lot, experimented with different techniques, and shared his experiences and knowledge through livestreams on TikTok, among other platforms. His success was reflected in his rapidly growing community.

Martin continued to deepen his knowledge: he began studying therapeutic gong playing and learned from students of Don Conreaux (Siri Gopal, Frida Möhres) and Guru Nanak (Alexander Renner), among others. In doing so, he realized that his years of training in healing meditation could be wonderfully combined with the sounds of the gong. He uses sound to support and deepen meditation and to make inner spaces of healing more accessible.

What does Martin offer through KOMM RUNTER Hamburg?

Through KOMM RUNTER Hamburg, Martin offers relaxation, inner clarity, and personalized support during times of transition. He specifically uses gong meditation, massage, and meditative healing techniques.

His work does not follow a rigid approach. Martin takes a highly individualized approach to determining what each person needs. This results in support tailored to their specific needs—using sound, touch, silence, conversation, or movement.

Gong meditation, sound baths, and concerts in Hamburg and the surrounding area

In his gong meditations and sound baths, Martin creates and maintains a safe space. The session usually begins with a brief period of settling in and a conversation about your wishes or topics of interest. He then allows the sounds of the gong to take effect—intuitively, mindfully, and attuned to the moment.

The gong has become a faithful companion to Martin. Many people come to him because they have already experienced a gong bath in a larger group and are now looking for a more personalized form of sound practice. Martin offers gong meditations for individuals as well as for couples or small groups. In addition to the individual sound baths in his practice, Martin also regularly plays his gongs for larger groups—for example, in churches or at yoga festivals in northern Germany. He has also accompanied collaborative gong nights, known as gong pujas, during which gongs resonate throughout the night.

Personalized Transformation Coaching

Supporting people through times of change is particularly close to his heart. This service is designed for those who are not just looking for a single relaxation session, but who would like ongoing support over several weeks or months. This type of collaboration has proven to be especially helpful during times of transition.

Transformation support is not traditional coaching. The main focus is on your own physical and mental experience through sound, touch, and meditative silence. Each session is tailored individually by Martin.

People dealing with stress, unhelpful patterns, or a desire for greater clarity will find a space here where they don’t have to “function.” Martin creates an experience for these individuals that can help them reconnect with their own inner strength.

Meditative Healing Technique

Another key component of his work is Sat Nam Rasayan®, a meditative healing technique from the tradition of Kundalini Yoga. Translated, Sat Nam Rasayan roughly means “healing through the flow of the soul.”

This practice is not about sending energy or actively “doing” anything. Rather, the treatment arises from inner stillness. While the recipient lies quietly and is touched only lightly, Martin creates a meditative space in which deep relaxation becomes possible.

This work can serve as a complementary and supportive measure, but it is not a substitute for medical or alternative treatment.

In addition to the methods listed here, you'll find even more options on Martin's website.

What makes Martin's work special?

Martin's work is accessible to many people because he pragmatically combines different approaches. He is open to many things, but he doesn't accept anything at face value. What he shares has also helped him personally.

His work draws on a unique blend of intuition, life experience, and a variety of methods. He combines sound, massage, meditation, yoga, silence, and conversation in a way that suits each individual. There is no set formula.

This ability to truly connect with people on a personal level defines his entire approach. Martin brings not only techniques to the table, but also a genuine presence. He listens, observes, and guides without pressure. It is precisely his own life story—marked by crises, periods of change, and a fresh start in his career—that lends depth and credibility to his work.

Who is KOMM RUNTER Hamburg for?

Martin's services are designed for people seeking relaxation, inner balance, and a mindful space for experience. Rather than traditional coaching, these individuals find someone who listens and creates a space where the body, sound, and silence can take effect.

Companies and institutions are also among his target audiences. He also offers programs focused on relaxation, exercise, and health promotion for the government agency where he worked for many years. Since 2025, Martin has also been guiding people as they take their first steps into the world of gong playing. The individual sessions are designed especially for anyone who wants to get to know the gong and gain some initial experience—even without owning a gong of their own. This provides a simple and personalized introduction to sound work with the gong.

What do Martin and Olli have in common?

Martin met Olli at a gong-making workshop led by Broder Oetken. For him, that moment also marked his entry into the wider gong community. There, he made connections, found inspiration, and took the next steps in his own sound practice.

What interests Martin most is diversity—for example, in training programs, gong-making, playing techniques, or the use of mallets. He has found time and again that there is no single “right” way. Everyone plays differently, every gong responds differently, and every method offers a unique perspective.

This openness also connects him to Olli’s work. It’s not about standardizing sound. It’s about finding tools that support one’s own expression.

Martin's favorite Ollihess mallets and friction mallet

For Martin, it is essential that a gong mallet or gong beater produces a variety of tonal qualities and blends harmoniously with the situation at hand.

He particularly enjoys working with the ollihess Profi Gong Chakra Mallet Set. the gong mallets him a wide range of expressive possibilities. The different striking surfaces and the ability to rotate the mallets allow for a variety of timbres and playing techniques.

He is also impressed by the Profi Gong Mallets earthtones. To him, they produce a pleasant, earthy tone and bring a deep, resonant quality to the gong playing. It is precisely this warm depth that complements his work with relaxation, grounding, and personalized guidance.

Latest developments at Martin

Martin is always trying something new. He’s recently developed a passion for drumming—especially shamanic drumming. Here, too, he remains creative and curious. He even makes his own mallets and experiments with the different sounds he can produce.
