Your gong mallet is handcrafted in our family workshop: wood, natural caoutchouc wellness fleece, carefully combined to produce a full, warm sound. With just a few simple steps, it will serve you well for years to come.
Why Care Is Important
A mallet is a natural product made of wood and fleece. Both materials are affected by moisture, dust, and sunlight. With the right care, the head remains soft and retains its shape, the fleece stays clean, and the mallet feels comfortable in your hand.
The most common causes of wear and tear:
- Dust and dirt that get trapped in the fleece
- Moisture that seeps into the wood or into the head
- UV radiation, which causes colors to fade and damages the material

Things like that can happen over time
Your mallet gets a lot of use, so it’s only natural that it will show signs of wear. The fleece will darken or pick up dust—that’s perfectly normal. Give your mallet a little TLC every now and then, and it’ll stay in great shape and be with you for years to come.
Here's How to Prevent It
- Keep the fleece clean. Gently brush the head regularly or run a lint-free brush over it to remove dust before it settles.
- Keep them dry. Never store mallets while they are damp. If they do get damp, let them air out briefly.
- Protect the handle. Wipe the wood down with a dry cloth from time to time. No oil or polish is needed—the wood has already been treated.
- Store in a protected place. Keep in a dry place, away from UV light, and store flat so that the head retains its shape.
Removing Light Stains
If the fleece is dusty or slightly dirty:
- Gently brush out the tangles from your hair.
- If necessary, gently brush the fleece with a soft, slightly damp brush.
- Do not soak; clean only the surface.
- Let it dry completely before putting the mallet away.
Good to know: A slightly flattened fleece will usually spring back into shape on its own after being brushed out.
In cases of more severe wear
If the fleece becomes thin or matted over time, or if the head loses its shape, this can no longer be fixed at home.
Important: Please do not restring the head yourself or repair it with glue—this will alter the weight and sound. Instead, please contact us, and we'll see what we can do.
Note: A consistently soft, dimensionally stable head is crucial for a clean sound. As soon as the feel of the instrument changes noticeably, it’s worth checking in with us.

My Mallet fleece is getting darker—is that a problem?
No, that's perfectly normal. As you play, the fleece gradually picks up dust and fine particles from the gong. Gently brush the head every now and then, and it will stay in good condition longer. This doesn't affect the sound.
How do I clean the fleece on my mallet?
Best to keep it dry: Gently brush the head with a soft, lint-free brush. If it’s very dirty, you can run a slightly damp brush over it, but be sure to let it dry thoroughly afterward. Don’t soak it.
Can my mallet get wet?
We like to avoid moisture, since it damages the insulation layer and isn’t good for the fleece or the wood either. Slightly damp is okay, but wet is not. So when cleaning, use only a slightly damp cloth and always let the mallet dry completely afterward.
How do I store my mallet properly?
Store it in a dry place, protected from UV light, and preferably lying flat in the included bag. This will help the head retain its shape and keep the colors looking their best. Avoid direct sunlight and hot air from heaters.
Do I need to maintain the wooden handle?
No, the handle has already been treated. Just wipe it down every now and then with a dry cloth—that's enough. Oil or polish aren't necessary and can even alter the surface.
The head of my mallet is a little flat—what should I do?
A slightly compressed fleece will usually spring back into shape on its own after being brushed out. Store the mallet lying flat so that the head retains its nice round shape.
How often should I maintain my mallet?
A quick brush-off after a few sessions is all it takes. Just ten seconds of attention every now and then, and your mallet will serve you for many years with a full, warm sound.
